Use the operating weight plus attachments to pick a trailer.
Excavator Weight Chart by Class
Each table is sorted from lightest to heaviest. Click a model for full specs, used prices and sell options. Weights come from the HeavyDutyYard equipment database; where a model has been checked against a manufacturer or dealer spec sheet, the last column links to it. They reflect typical published operating weights; counterweight, track shoes, cab and attachments change the real number, so confirm against the spec sheet for your serial number.

What Trailer Do I Need to Haul It?
Match the trailer's rated payload, not its gross rating, to the machine's operating weight plus anything riding with it. The ranges below are the payload ratings of the trailer models in our own data. Your truck's towing and combined weight ratings, and state permit rules for heavy loads, also apply.
Trailer payload ranges from our trailer data
| Trailer type | Payload in our data | Excavator models at or under the top payload |
|---|---|---|
| Gooseneck trailers | 8,500–18,100 lb (19 models) | 37 of 93 |
| Flatbed and step deck semi-trailers | 42,000–49,000 lb (25 models) | 61 of 93 |
| Lowboy trailers | 55,000–120,000 lb (23 models) | 91 of 93 |
Counts include machines whose operating weight is at or below the highest-rated trailer of that type. A lighter trailer in the same category carries less.
In practice: most mini excavators ride on a gooseneck or tilt deck behind a heavy pickup. Compact and midi machines need a heavy gooseneck at the light end and a semi-trailer at the heavy end. Mid-size excavators move on flatbed, step deck or lowboy semi-trailers, and a lowboy's low deck helps keep a tall machine under height limits. Large and very large excavators go on multi-axle lowboys, often with the boom, stick or counterweight removed and with oversize or overweight permits.

Weight and Choosing the Right Size
Weight tracks digging depth, lift capacity and stability, but it also sets your transport cost and whether the machine can work on soft ground or near utilities. If you're deciding what to buy, what size excavator do I need matches sizes to jobs, and used excavator prices covers what each class costs. Selling one? The value estimator gives a starting range.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does an excavator weigh?
Excavators weigh 2,593 lb (Bobcat E10) to 190,204 lb (Caterpillar 390) in our data. By class: mini excavators run 2,593–12,688 lb; compact and midi excavators run 13,100–27,690 lb; mid-size excavators run 30,864–56,879 lb; large excavators run 61,730–93,000 lb; very large excavators run 100,310–190,204 lb.
How much does a mini excavator weigh?
Mini excavators in our chart (under 13,000 lb) weigh 2,593–12,688 lb across 34 models. The smallest can ride on a heavy-duty bumper-pull trailer; most need a gooseneck or a tilt deck rated above the machine's operating weight plus attachments.
How much does a 20-ton excavator weigh?
Machines in the 20-ton class (CAT 320, Komatsu PC200, Deere 200G size) fall in our mid-size group, which runs 30,864–56,879 lb. Look up the exact model in the chart; counterweight, track shoe width and attachments change the final number.
Does operating weight include the bucket?
Usually yes. Manufacturers typically quote operating weight with a standard bucket, full fuel and an operator, but the exact definition varies by brand. Heavier counterweights, wider shoes, thumbs and quick couplers add weight, so check the spec sheet for your configuration before you book a trailer.
What trailer do I need for a mini excavator?
Pick a trailer whose rated payload is more than the machine plus its attachments. The gooseneck trailers in our data carry 8,500–18,100 lb, which covers most mini excavators. Also check that your truck's towing and combined weight ratings cover the loaded trailer.
