Short answer
Skid steers in our data weigh 2,892–10,500 lb, and compact track loaders weigh 6,148–12,925 lb. Small frame machines run 2,892–6,980 lb; medium frame machines run 7,055–8,893 lb; large frame machines run 9,154–12,925 lb. Add the bucket and attachments when you match a trailer.
Skid Steer and Track Loader Weights by Frame Size
Each table is sorted from lightest to heaviest and mixes wheeled skid steers and compact track loaders so you can compare across both. Click a model for specs, used prices and sell options. Weights come from the HeavyDutyYard equipment database; where a model has been checked against a manufacturer or dealer spec sheet, the last column links to it. They reflect typical published operating weights; cab, tracks, counterweight and attachments change the real number.

What Trailer Do I Need to Haul It?
Match the trailer's rated payload to the machine's operating weight plus the bucket, forks or attachment riding with it. These are the payload ranges of the trailer models in our own data.
Trailer payload ranges from our trailer data
| Trailer type | Payload in our data | Fits |
|---|---|---|
| Gooseneck trailers | 8,500–18,100 lb (19 models) | 64 of 64 machines in this chart weigh no more than the top gooseneck rating |
| Flatbed and step deck semi-trailers | 42,000–49,000 lb (25 models) | Several loaders at once, or a loader with a mini excavator |
| Lowboy trailers | 55,000–120,000 lb (23 models) | Rarely needed for loaders; used when one rides with a larger machine |
A gooseneck at the light end of the range won't carry a large-frame track loader. Check the specific trailer's payload rating.
Small-frame skid steers can ride on a heavy-duty bumper-pull equipment trailer if its payload covers the machine and bucket. Medium and large frames, and nearly all track loaders, belong on a gooseneck or tilt deck. For shipping costs and booking a carrier, see heavy equipment shipping costs.
Skid Steer or Track Loader?
Tracks add weight and spread it out, which helps on soft ground and slopes but costs more to buy and maintain. Our skid steer vs compact track loader guide covers the trade-off. For model comparisons, see Cat 259D vs 279D vs 289D and the Cat D Series skid steer comparison. Prices are in used skid steer prices and used compact track loader prices.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a skid steer weigh?
Wheeled skid steers in our data weigh 2,892–10,500 lb across 41 models. Across skid steers and track loaders by frame size: small frame machines (under 7,000 lb) run 2,892–6,980 lb; medium frame machines (7,000–9,000 lb) run 7,055–8,893 lb; large frame machines (9,000 lb and up) run 9,154–12,925 lb.
How much does a compact track loader weigh?
Compact track loaders in our data weigh 6,148–12,925 lb across 23 models. A track loader is usually heavier than a wheeled skid steer of the same frame size because of the undercarriage.
Is operating weight the same as rated operating capacity?
No. Operating weight is what the machine itself weighs, which is what your trailer has to carry. Rated operating capacity is how much the machine can safely lift in the bucket, set as a fixed share of its tipping load. Check which share a spec sheet uses: Caterpillar's track loader sheets, for example, list capacity at both 35% and 50% of tipping load.
What trailer do I need for a skid steer?
Use a trailer whose rated payload is more than the machine plus its bucket and attachments. The gooseneck trailers in our data carry 8,500–18,100 lb, and 64 of the 64 skid steers and track loaders in this chart weigh no more than the top of that range. Check your truck's towing and combined weight ratings too.
