How Many Hours Is a Lot? Equipment Hours Checker

A lot of hours means most of a machine's typical working life: Caterpillar's 1998 Performance Handbook puts a mid-size (320B–330B class) excavator at 10,000–15,000 hours and a D3–D7 dozer at 8,000–12,000. Skid steers typically last about 5,000 hours and forklifts about 10,000. Enter your machine's hours and year to see its yearly use and how far through its typical life it is.

Equipment hours benchmarks by machine type

“Typical life” is the range the source gives for useful life or a major overhaul, from severe to light work. The checker measures your hours against the middle (reference) figure. Where a source gives one yearly figure, the checker treats ±25% of it as typical use.

Caterpillar figures come from the “Guide for Selecting Ownership Period” in Performance Handbook Edition 29 (1998) for the model series named. They describe how long an owner should plan to keep the machine, not when it will fail. Newer handbook editions no longer print this table. Benchmarks compiled October 2026.

How to read your result

  • Hours per yearis total hours divided by the machine's age. A machine with high hours for its age worked hard; one with low hours may have sat, which brings its own problems with seals and batteries.
  • Use for its age compares that rate with the sourced yearly figure for the type: light, typical or heavy.
  • Share of typical lifeis your hours against the reference figure. Past 100% doesn't mean the machine is done. Many are rebuilt and keep working, so records matter more than the number.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many hours is a lot for an excavator?

For a mid-size excavator (320B–330B class), Caterpillar's 1998 Performance Handbook ownership-period guide uses 10,000 hours in severe work, 12,000 in average work and 15,000 in moderate work. A Construction Equipment survey found contractors take the average excavator out of primary production at about 9,800 hours. Mini excavators run shorter: about 5,000 to 10,000 hours.

How many hours is a lot for a skid steer?

John Deere dealer TriGreen puts the typical skid steer lifespan at about 5,000 hours. Texas Final Drive says a 40 hp machine usually needs an engine overhaul after about 4,000 hours, while an 80 hp machine can pass 8,000 first.

How many hours does a forklift last?

Toyota says most forklifts need replacing at around 10,000 hours, or 8,000 or less in demanding work. Raymond lists 10,000–11,000 hours for internal combustion trucks and up to 14,000 for some electric models.

What are normal hours per year for heavy equipment?

It varies widely by type. Survey and OEM figures run from about 100–400 hours a year for compact excavators and around 300 for backhoes to 800–1,600 for excavators and 1,000–1,500 for wheel loaders. The table on this page lists each type with its source.

Can I trust the hour meter?

Not on its own. Meters get replaced and can stop working. Compare the reading with wear on pins, pedals, the seat and the undercarriage, and ask for service records that log hours. Our hour meter guide covers how to check.

Why aren't compact tractors in the table?

We only publish a benchmark when we can cite a manufacturer, dealer, university or industry source. We could not find a reliable published life or usage figure for compact tractors, so we left them out.
